Alternatives to PennyTie
PennyTie does one narrow thing: it converts text-based bank statement PDFs to CSV in your browser and checks that the balances add up. It is not the right tool for every job. Here are real alternatives, what each says on its own public page (as read on 4 November 2026), and when each is the better choice. Features and prices change, so check each current page before you decide. We have not tested these tools' accuracy and make no claim about it.
Start with your bank
Many banks let you download transactions as CSV, OFX or QIF straight from online banking, often for a longer period than the PDF. If yours does, that is usually the best option: no conversion at all. PDFs are the fallback for statements the bank will only give you as a PDF, or for older periods. Check which formats and date ranges your bank offers.
The alternatives
DocuClipper
Upload-based extraction for financial documents. Its site says it handles scanned and photographed statements with OCR, checks totals against printed opening and closing balances, and exports to Excel, CSV, QBO and Xero. It states SOC 2 Type II. Listed plans start at $29/month, with a 14-day trial rather than a permanent free tier. Better when: you are a firm processing many or scanned statements and need an audited vendor and team features.
BankConv
Upload-based converter. Its pricing page lists pay-per-document ($2.99 for up to 10 pages) and monthly plans billed yearly, outputs including Excel, CSV, Google Sheets, OFX, QFX and QBO, a free first-5-pages preview, and states that statements are deleted automatically after 24 hours. We could not see OCR mentioned on that page; check theirs. Better when: you want OFX/QFX/QBO output or occasional single-document payment.
YourBankStatementConverter
Upload-based. It says it handles PDF, image and scanned statements with OCR, outputs a native Excel workbook plus CSV, and includes a reconciliation sheet. Its page says uploads are deleted 24 hours after upload and that text extraction is done by Google's Gemini, so pages are sent to Google. A first conversion needs no account. Better when: your statements are scans or photos and you accept the upload and AI processing it describes.
Bank Statement Converter
Upload-based. Its home page says anonymous users can convert up to a daily page limit and that registering raises the limit; at the time we read it, it did not list prices, retention periods or OCR support on that page. Better when: you want a quick one-off Excel file; read their privacy policy first.
Tabula
Free, open-source desktop tool for pulling tables out of PDFs; it runs as a local app that you use in your browser. You draw the table area yourself and export CSV or Excel. It works on text-based PDFs only, and it does not check balances. Better when: you want a free, open-source, fully manual tool and are comfortable cleaning up the result.
Adobe Acrobat online PDF to Excel
A general PDF-table-to-Excel converter, not specific to bank statements. Its page says the file is handled on Adobe's servers and deleted unless you sign in to save it. Free limits and OCR for this tool were not stated on that page. Better when: you already use Adobe and the PDF is a simple table; it will not reconcile balances for you.
Quick guide
| If you have… | Look at |
|---|---|
| Scanned or photographed statements | An OCR-capable service (for example DocuClipper or YourBankStatementConverter per their pages). PennyTie cannot read these. |
| A bank that offers CSV/OFX export | Use the bank's export. |
| Hundreds of statements a month, or team workflows | A professional service with batch features and support. |
| QBO, OFX or XLSX needed directly | A tool that lists those formats. PennyTie exports CSV and XLSX (no QBO or OFX); see QuickBooks CSV and Xero CSV. |
| Free, fully manual extraction | Tabula. |
When PennyTie fits
- Your statements are text PDFs downloaded from online banking.
- You do not want the file uploaded, and you want to be able to verify that yourself.
- You care that the totals are proven, with flagged rows when they are not.
- You process one statement at a time, or want a lower price ($9/month or $79/year; free up to 5 pages per file).
When it does not
PennyTie has no OCR, produces CSV and XLSX only (no QBO or OFX), has no team features, API or integrations. It has no SOC 2 report. If those matter, pick a tool built for them.
Try it: open PennyTie, drop a text-based statement PDF (or use the built-in fictional sample) and see whether the totals tie out. Free for statements up to 5 pages; nothing is uploaded.
